📋 General Features
- 4 mandibular incisors total — 2 central + 2 lateral
- Smallest teeth in the mouth — smallest mesiodistal dimensions of any tooth
- Central is smaller than lateral — the exact reverse of the maxillary arch, where the central is larger
1️⃣ Mandibular Central Incisor
First Calcification
3 – 4 months
Crown Completed
4 – 5 years
Eruption
6 – 7 years
Root Completion
9 years
- First permanent tooth to erupt in the mouth (6–7 years)
- Labial: narrow trapezoid; mesial and distal outlines are nearly straight and parallel
- Bilateral symmetry: mesial and distal sides are nearly equal — a unique feature among anterior teeth
- Contact areas: both mesial and distal at the incisal third
- Mesial aspect: triangular outline; incisal ridge sits ON the vertical root axis (unlike the maxillary central, where it's lingual to the axis)
- CEJ curvature: 3 mm mesial, 1 mm distal
Exam tip: The mandibular central incisor's near bilateral symmetry and its incisal ridge sitting directly on the root axis are two of its most distinguishing, frequently tested features.
2️⃣ Mandibular Lateral Incisor
- Slightly larger than the central incisor — opposite of the maxillary pattern
- Crown tilts distally relative to the root
- Distoincisal angle is more rounded than the central's
- Erupts at 7 – 8 years, shortly after the central incisor
🔬 Lingual & Root Features (Both Teeth)
- Lingual surfaces are less developed than their maxillary counterparts — smaller cingulum, flatter ridges
- Root: long, slender, flattened mesiodistally
- Root canal: usually a single canal that may split into buccal and lingual canals
MANDIBULAR INCISORS
📋 Key Facts
Smallest teeth — smallest MD
Central smaller than lateral
Near bilateral symmetry (central)
1️⃣ Central Incisor
Trapezoid, parallel sides
Incisal ridge ON root axis
Eruption 6–7 yrs — 1st permanent tooth
2️⃣ Lateral vs Central
Lateral is larger
Crown tilts distally
Eruption 7–8 yrs
🔬 Root & Lingual
Less developed cingulum
Root: long, slender, flattened MD
1
Smallest Teeth
Mandibular incisors have the smallest mesiodistal dimensions of any teeth in the mouth.
2
Reversed Size Pattern
Mandibular central is smaller than lateral — the opposite of the maxillary arch pattern.
3
Bilateral Symmetry
The mandibular central incisor shows near bilateral symmetry — mesial and distal sides are nearly equal.
4
Incisal Ridge Position
The incisal ridge sits on the vertical root axis (vs. lingual to the axis on the maxillary central).
5
First to Erupt
The mandibular central incisor erupts at 6–7 years — the very first permanent tooth to erupt.
6
CEJ Curvatures
Mesial CEJ = 3 mm; Distal CEJ = only 1 mm — a much bigger gap than in maxillary incisors.
7
Lateral Tilts Distally
The mandibular lateral incisor's crown tilts distally relative to its root.
8
Lingual Surface
Lingual surfaces are less developed than maxillary incisors — flatter cingulum and ridges.
9
Root Shape
Roots are long, slender, and flattened mesiodistally — the canal may split into buccal and lingual canals.
10
Contact Areas
Mandibular central: both mesial and distal contacts at the incisal third.

👁️ Labial Aspect — Central & Lateral
Central
Narrow Trapezoid, Bilateral Symmetry
Mesial and distal sides are nearly parallel, giving near bilateral symmetry — unique among anterior teeth.
Lateral
Slightly Larger, Distally Tilted Crown
The crown tilts distally on the root, with a more rounded distoincisal angle than the central.
👅 Lingual Aspect
Lingual
Less Developed Than Maxillary Incisors
A flatter cingulum and less pronounced marginal ridges compared to the maxillary central incisor.
📐 Mesial & Distal Aspects
Mesial
Incisal Ridge ON the Root Axis
Unlike the maxillary central (ridge lingual to axis), here the incisal ridge sits directly on the vertical root axis.
Distal
Only 1mm Cervical Curvature
Similar shape to the mesial aspect, but with a much smaller cervical curvature of just 1 mm.
⬆️ Incisal Aspect & Comparison
Incisal
Narrow Mesiodistally, Wide Labiolingually
The crown is much narrower mesiodistally than labiolingually — explaining why these are the smallest MD teeth.
Comparison
Central (Left) vs Lateral (Right)
The lateral is slightly larger and tilts distally — the reverse pattern of the maxillary arch.
🦴 Root Morphology
Root
Long, Slender, Flattened Mesiodistally
The single root is flattened mesiodistally and may show a single canal that splits into buccal and lingual canals.
⚠️ Exam Trap: Remember the mandibular arch reverses the maxillary size pattern — here the lateral is larger than the central, not smaller.
